Why I built ScholarScan

ScholarScan started at my own kitchen table, while I was trying to help my daughter find scholarships for college. It grew into a tool any student can use for the same thing.

Matt Coleman

Founder, ScholarScan

A dad in Oregon who went looking for a better way to pay for college and ended up building one.

When my daughter started her senior year, we did what most families do. We sat down together and tried to find scholarships she could actually win. What we found instead was a lot of the same generic lists, the same big national awards that every student in the country was already chasing, and very little that fit her specifically. The local awards, the ones with real odds, were scattered across community foundation pages, school bulletins, and PDFs that no search tool seemed to reach.

I have spent my career building software, so I kept thinking there had to be a better way to do this than opening thirty tabs and copying deadlines into a spreadsheet. The awards were out there. The problem was finding the ones that matched a real student and then keeping track of them once you did.

From one kitchen table to any student

So I built ScholarScan for her. Instead of matching her against a fixed database, it searches the live web for scholarships that fit her exact profile, scores each one against her eligibility, and keeps every deadline and status in one place. It surfaced awards we never would have found on our own, including small local ones with far less competition than the national names.

Once it was working for my daughter, it was obvious the same tool could help any student. The problem we ran into is not unique to us. Every family trying to pay for college faces the same scattered search and the same easy-to-miss deadlines. So I opened ScholarScan up so that any student, parent, or counselor could use it for their own search.

What ScholarScan is, plainly

ScholarScan is a scholarship finder and application tracker. It runs live web searches for your profile, ranks what it finds by how well you match, and helps you keep every application organized from saved to submitted. It also publishes plain-language guides on how the scholarship and financial aid process actually works, because understanding the process is half the battle.

It is a small, independent product, not a big company, and it is still growing. If you have feedback or a question, I read it. You can reach us at hello@scholarscan.ai.
